In Cod We Trust

In the Arctic north of Norway, over two thousand kilometers from the capital, lies the remote village of Båtsfjord, where cod is considered sacred. This little fishing town is long past its heyday, however, now that the Barents Sea barely has any fish left in it. Sustainability is a challenge, young people are leaving, and geopolitical tensions with neighboring Russia are escalating. Yet, the remaining residents refuse to give up. Without being gloomy, In Cod We Trust captures everyday life: from small village quarrels and deep friendships to sex and alcohol, but above all, a love for the rugged sea and the pride of calling this corner of the earth their home. With a healthy dose of humor, the film shines a spotlight on a resilient community — a colorful bunch that radiates warmth even in the coldest corner of the world.

In Cod We Trust is the second documentary by director Guro Saniola Bjerk, who herself comes from Båtsfjord. The film premiered this spring at the 28th Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival, where it was nominated for a Golden Alexander and instantly became a festival favorite.
