The Beauty of Errors

In a remote wooden house on the edge of the Finnish forests, Tero, a single father, has shared the ups and downs of life with his son Henri for fifteen years. Their close-knit existence revolves around familiar rituals—tinkering with motorbikes, chopping wood, heating up meals, and having deep conversations in the sauna—but time marches on. Henri grows up, and as he stands on the threshold of adulthood and decides to move in with his girlfriend, Tero suddenly finds himself alone. As empty beer cans pile up beside his bed, the roles slowly begin to reverse. In this touching documentary about letting go and the loneliness that accompanies it, director Jukka Kärkkäinen examines the complex relationship between father and son. With breathtaking landscapes and a touch of humor, The Beauty of Errors is deeply moving.

The Beauty of Errors premiered this spring at the Tampere Film Festival, where it won the Risto Jarva Prize; it was also selected for festivals including Visions du Réel and the 27th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival. The screening at the Noordelijk Film Festival marks its Dutch premiere.
