The 43rd edition of the Noordelijk Film Festival!
The 43rd edition of the Northern Film Festival will take place from 8 to 12 November. As every year, we keep our familiar Nordic Focus. This year we are adding the side programme Memmetaal, among others. The theme of the 43rd edition is ‘Home’.
About the festival
The Noordelijk Film Festival is a five-day film festival in Leeuwarden that takes place every year in November. In the autumn, 200 people work at the Northern Film Festival, including 180 volunteers. Every year, the festival sells around 20,000 tickets. Stadsschouwburg De Harmonie is the vibrant festival heart, while Slieker Film, Pathé Leeuwarden and Neushoorn are also festival venues.
The theme of the 43rd edition is ‘Home’. Home is a very emotive and sensitive concept that is difficult to capture in a few words, but is often beautifully depicted in films. For many people, home is familiar territory, a place where they feel safe and secure and where they meet family and friends. For others, home evokes a lack, something that was and no longer is or never was. We see this (positive and negative) connotation with home a lot in the film offerings.
Nordic focus & side programmes
The Noordelijk Film Festival is distinguished by a focus on Northern European cinema. From Iceland, Ireland, the UK and the Netherlands to Scandinavia and the Baltics. Exciting feature films, intriguing documentaries and unique arthouse films from this great northern region share the screen with promising films from its own region. With the Noorderkroon competition and Industry programme, it provides a stage and a stepping stone for professional talent. In addition, there are several side programmes. New this year is the Memmetaal section on minority languages.
The Noordelijk Film Festival stands for hospitality and inclusiveness: we want everyone to feel welcome and accepted with us. We also stand for special encounters, for example between established filmmakers and up-and-coming talent in a master class, or at the connecting networking drinks. The festival has many long-term collaborations, both within the team (including returning volunteers) and with partners (including Stadsschouwburg De Harmonie), funds, sponsors and subsidisers. As an organisation, we are interested and involved with de mienskip.
As the North’s premier film festival, we serve audiences by highlighting films from northern Europe and playing a catalytic role in the regional film (maker) climate. All of this within a unique atmosphere and festival experience around the big screen.
