Wicker

On the outskirts of a remote fishing village that thrives on superstition, lives a headstrong fishing woman (Olivia Colman). She is an odd one out, excluded and mocked by her fellow villagers because of her raw appearance and the pungent smell surrounding her. Determined to ignore their narrow-minded views and contempt, she sarcastically asks the local basket weaver (Peter Dinklage) to make an ideal husband for her; one made out of willow branches. But when this groom (played by Alexander Skarsgård) comes to life, chaos ensues in the conservative village: not only indignation, but also jealousy, because her wicker life partner exceeds all expectations. Humorous fairy tale Wicker, with great supporting parts from Elizabeth Debicki (The Crown) and Ella Bruccoleri (The Other Bennet Sister), is a fresh mix of romance, dark fantasy and satire: a contemporary fable about desire and the courage to swim against the current.

Wicker premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and is the second feature film by the directing duo Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson. The award-winning Olivia Colman (one Oscar, two Emmys, three Golden Globes and four BAFTA's) is on a roll in Wicker, and is visibly enjoying her role as the Fishing woman. Her co-star Alexander Skarsgård can this festival also be seen in Robert Eggers' The Northman (2019). The film is based on the short story The Wicker Husband, by Ursula Wills-Jones.
