Sovereign Son

When his father’s body is discovered after nine months in a small tent near Amsterdam, Marcus van Belkum gets the chance to learn about the man who abandoned him as an infant. Together with director Cindy Jansen, he traces the path of a recluse who lived on the fringes of society; however, as his own distrust of the authorities grows, the search takes a different turn. Marcus falls under the sway of the online manosphere and ideologies centered on discipline and self-reliance take deep root in his mind. Memories and delusions begin to blur, and using unsettling AI-generated imagery, Marcus himself is the hero of his own story. What was meant to be an exploration of a lost family member evolves into a film about alienation, radical thought patterns, and the desire to turn one’s back on the established order for good.

Sovereign Son premiered earlier this year as part of the official selection at IFFR, and its screening at the Noordelijk Film Festival marks its Frisian premiere. It is the third documentary by director Cindy Jansen, whose previous films—Auld Lang Syne (2015) and Prince of Muck (2021)—were both screened at the Netherlands Film Festival.

Director Cindy Jansen will be present for a Q&A session following the screening, lead by moderator Rene Duursma.
