Club Heaven

In a nightclub in the Chinese city of Chengdu, the nightlife scene is in full swing. While the night is spent in exuberant celebration and champagne is served with theatrical flair, the staff behind the scenes are working themselves to the bone. This documentary focuses on these individuals: the unsung workers grappling with exhaustion, meager wages, and the constant awareness that they are replaceable. Thoughtful cinematography sharply captures the contrast between the revelers and the staff, while the dance floor—filmed partly using a thermal camera—seems to transform into a living organism. A social critique, Club Heaven offers a portrayal of contemporary capitalism and the endless pursuit of euphoria that is as hypnotic as it is unsettling; it also serves as proof that a film need not rely on music to convey its message.

Club Heaven is the debut feature-length documentary by director Jona Honer; it premiered this spring at Visions du Réel. It was subsequently screened at the Netherlands Film Festival and acclaimed at the Noordelijk Film Festival—where it had its Frisian premiere—with director Jona Honer in attendance for a post-screening discussion.
