Omschrijving

The Sámi, Europe's only remaining indigenous people, are suffering under the economy-driven policies of the Finnish government. It is a story as old as time, of European colonialism disguised by power and law. In the documentary Eatnameamet - Our Silent Struggle director Janne Niskala reveals the injustices of this region. From cultural appropriation to hate crimes and the appropriation of land and resources, the Sámi people fight tirelessly for the continuation of their existence, their language, their knowledge and their commitment to the land. Niskala, herself a Sámi, closely follows the struggles of her nation. She portrays the strength and resilience of politically active youth and balances the heavy subject with sweeping panoramas of the impressive landscapes in the heart of the Sámi homeland. The film touches on a larger issue: who does this land belong to?
