Daniel
This is the story of one of the most spectacular kidnappings in recent times. The young Danish photojournalist Daniel Rye travels to Syria in 2013 to capture the daily live of civilians. In the border town of Azaz, he will then be held hostage for 398 days by the terrorist organisation Islamic State, along with several other foreigners including the American journalist James Foley. The film follows Daniel’s struggle to survive in captivity, his friendship with James, and the nightmare of the Rye family back home in Denmark as they try to cope with the fear that they may never see their son alive again. At the centre of this crisis, we find hostage negotiator, Arthur, who plays a pivotal role in securing Daniel’s release. The film is based on the book The ISIS Hostage (2016) written by Danish journalist Puk Damsgård with Daniel Rye's personal experiences.
Daniel is the opening film of the Northern Film Programme and will be screened on Wednesday evening November 11th in all theatres participating in the film programme. At some locations a second screening is programmed.
