Suddenly home for a year with his children, up-and-coming Icelandic filmmaker Hlynur Pálmason created his own microcosmic utopia with this warm and playful short film. The setting is simple: it involves a pole that is renamed a tree house. The three children climb, play and let their imaginations run wild. It makes for loving, relatable and funny scenes, in which the trio continues their exploration undisturbed.
Nest beautifully captures the changing seasons on 35mm and is a tangible masterpiece full of the young cast's untamed energy. The short film will be screened at the Northern Film Festival prior to the documentary Songs of Earth.
Norway's impressive mountains provide the monumental setting for the most cinematic nature experience of the year. Songs of Earth is a beautiful, existential journey in which the filmmaker's parents serve as human benchmarks against the forces of the earth in the background. Margreth Olin has created a stunningly cinematic documentary that explores life, death, nature and simply being present in this world.
With the breathtaking Nordic seasons as an epic backdrop, Olin embarks on a journey across the vast expanses with her aging parents. Their family has always lived side by side with nature here, even when the earth showed its most merciless side. Her parents' love and lifelong loyalty reflect how environment and inner space resonate with each other.
A lyrical and visionary tribute to Olin's homeland that transcends anything you’ve seen on the big screen. It is a film you absolutely must experience.
