In the documentary Skin and Bone, pet owners share why they choose to have their beloved pets taxidermied. Instead of burying or cremating their deceased companions, they opt to preserve them through taxidermy. The owners express how much happiness and comfort their pets brought them and the important role these animals played in their lives. Each owner has their own personal reasons for choosing taxidermy. Meanwhile, the film follows the entire process of preserving the pets. After measuring all the limbs, skinning, cleaning, and tanning the hide, the taxidermist recreates the pet like a sculptor. He assembles the bones and skull and models the body using foam and clay. Finally, he dresses the pet again with its fur. When the taxidermist finishes, the owners come to pick up their pets and bring them back home.
