Thanks to our globalizing world where art, culture and ideas seem to migrate freely, we are entering a process of interculturalisation that raise critical questions about the meaning and value of cultural, ethnic and national identity. The uncertainty that emerged from this, linked to the increase of migration, has been fertile ground for right-wing populist thought. While there seems to be a growing social division about these issues, there apparently is sufficient public support for right-wing populism. We contribute to this, or choose to not take any action. It raises the question of where we want to go as a society. Which desires and fears keep us busy? What are our emotional characteristics? De slaap van de rede (The Sleep of Reason) is a short experimental documentary by the Groningen-based director Reynaert Vosveld about the emotions that shape our current social and political zeitgeist.

The music supports the visuals, and the visuals reinforce the lyrics of the band Nonchelange & Le Motat. This short film by filmmaker Geerten Harmens from Drenthe shows a young, ambitious man named Patrick Détruit. At 32, Patrick signed a lifetime contract with a mysterious factory called Lumière. He, like the others in the factory, is committed to an everyday goal: the pursuit of a white light source. The question "why?" has not been asked for years. Every day the physical abilities of the workers are put to the test. But, slowly we see Patrick's ambition come at a cost, while his world is getting smaller and smaller. Will he reach his goal?

All characters symbolize some form of individuality. Megan stands for the influence other factors have on our choices. Austin illustrates accepting a situation and experiencing the consequences of our choices. Nico symbolizes going against what seems logical and following our own beliefs. Even, or perhaps especially, when this goes against what is mainstream. We follow Megan, Austin and Nico through the eyes of Pavel.

A hybrid coming-of-age film about teenagers Indy, Emma and Myrte. They grow up under the ever-watchful eye of the Amelander lighthouse. The Frisian nature is a stranger, as is Indy's older second cousin, Jornt, who takes the girls fishing. When Jornt races through the dunes and runs over a rabbit, the mood takes a subtle turn. The unease among the three teenage girls increases more and more, and at the same time, it becomes cinematographically turbulent. In the short film Eb, directors Frederik and Maria Stuut instinctively take the viewer along in the inevitable quest of youth. The filmmakers cast from Ameland and Friesland, and both Ameland and Leeuwarder dialects are spoken in the film.

In this short documentary, filmmaker Nuria Zantman takes you on a visual journey into the experience and emotions of a female activist in Iran. The Iranian tells what it is like to be a woman in her country. In a system shaped after men, she has been standing up for women's rights for more than a decade. What if you say no, what if you don't go along with what is expected of you? Rebellious Silence shows you the toll it takes to fight for women's rights but also gives hope for the future of these silent rebels. In addition to being a filmmaker, Zantman is also an activist.

This imaginative animated short film by Anne Fie Salverda is a visualization of the poem It skip by Frisian poet Eeltsje Hettinga. Hettinga wrote the poem in response to the degradation of the Wadden area. "It Wad ferpatst, it Wad ferpatst”, his voice echoes over the images. In the film, a skipper loses himself in a melancholy dream about the future of his world. Supported by the piano music of Kanako Inoue, Salverda's animations take you on a trip into a dreamy Wadden world.
