Jone, Sometimes

It is mid-August, and Bilbao is buzzing with the annual festival week, yet twenty-year-old Jone finds herself torn between two worlds. Amidst the festivities, she falls head over heels for the eccentric Olga—a first love that brings with it an enchanting sense of freedom and possibility. Back home, however, caring for her father, Aitor, demands her full attention. His worsening Parkinson’s disease has left him unable to work, forcing Jone to shoulder the responsibility of caring for both him and her younger sister, Marta. Her world seems to be expanding and shrinking all at once. Jone, Sometimes is a compelling coming-of-age film about the clash between youthful abandon and responsibility. It offers a vulnerable, authentic portrait exploring how much space one is allowed to claim for oneself when loved ones are in greatest need.

Jone, Sometimes marks the solo feature film debut of director Sara Fantova; it premiered last year at the 28th Málaga Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Mention for Best Director. The film also garnered awards at the D’A Film Festival Barcelona and Toulouse Cinespaña.
