Joik workshop

In this remarkable and musical workshop, actor and joiker Mikkel Gaup shares the ancient Sámi vocal tradition of joik – a powerful, personal way to express yourself and to connect with nature, people, and memory. In the great hall of the Westerkerk in Leeuwarden, participants are invited to explore their voice, rhythm, and emotion in a respectful and playful setting. A unique opportunity to experience the joik yourself and to share it with each other.

Host Mikkel Gaup, from Sápmi himself, is not only joiker and musician, but also an actor. The festival screens multiple films in which he stars. He will be present at the screenings of Pathfinder (Nils Gaup, 1987) on Friday and on Thursday at the Dutch premiere of Árru (Elle Sofe Sara, 2026).
