Filmlezing: Noordse mythologie in films

Norse mythology has been highly influential throughout history and continues to inspire writers, artists, and filmmakers. One of the most well-known examples is J.R.R. Tolkien, who drew inspiration and guidance from the tone, atmosphere, characters, and tales of Norse mythology for his immensely popular—and widely adapted—The Lord of the Rings; yet, he is certainly not alone. At times, these influences are more subtle, appearing as motifs woven into new narratives, while at other times, there are direct references to mythical figures such as Odin, Thor, and Loki. Particularly in Western Europe, Norse mythology remains one of the most familiar mythological traditions, alongside those of the Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, and Germanic peoples.

In this film lecture—illustrated with numerous clips—cultural historian and film educator Constant Hoogenbosch takes you on a journey through a wondrous world of monsters and heroes. The discussion covers a variety of films and series, including Game of Thrones, The Lord of the Rings, The 13th Warrior, Die Nibelungen, Harry Potter, The Ritual, and Valhalla Rising.
