Vogels kun je niet melken

Black-tailed godwits are disappearing from the Frisian landscape, but they keep coming back to Bote's farm. Every spring they report, in large numbers. Bote's place has therefore been called 'the last pearl of Friesland'. The yearly return of this special meadow bird may be due to Bote's methods. He cherishes the godwits on his land, doing everything for them. For instance, his meadows are not covered with modern English ryegrass - with which just about the entire Frisian countryside is covered - but with old-fashioned meadow grass. That cows do not perform as well on this grass, Bote accepts.

In this perceptive documentary by Barbara Makkinga, you see how difficult it is to stick to something in changing times. For instance, Astrid, Bote's wife, grants him his love of birds. His children, however, are ready to take over the farming business and would only do things very differently.
