Unruly

In the early 20th century, society had extremely conservative expectations about how young women should behave, but seventeen-year-old Maren does not care much about that. Maren portrays one of the thousands of Scandinavian women who at the time were forced to be sent to a home for being too dissolute. She ends up on the Danish island Sprogø, along with other debauched women for the time, where she is treated in an inhumane way for her moral 'weakness'. Stripped of their freedom and rights, the women cling to their identities and try to find humanity in each other.

Unruly world-premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022. Director Malou Reymann (A Perfectly Normal Family) carefully builds a bridge to the present with this chilling drama, which is based on true events.
