The Last Viking
From Danish director and screenwriter Anders Thomas Jensen comes The Last Viking, a hilarious and chaotic crime comedy centred around two brothers. Bank robber Anker (Nicolaj Lie Kaas) is released from prison after fifteen years, determined to dig up the loot from his robbery.
Unfortunately, his brother Manfred (Mads Mikkelsen) is the only one who knows the location, but he suffers from a mental disorder that convinces him he is John Lennon – just as he used to believe he was a Viking. With a ruthless rival hot on their heels, the brothers embark on a frantic race against time – a madcap quest that is not only about finding the money, but also about unravelling their childhood traumas and discovering who they really are.
The Last Viking premiered this autumn at the Venice Film Festival and was also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. Director Anders Thomas Jensen, whose films have always starred Nikolaj Lie Kaas and Mads Mikkelsen, was nominated for an Oscar in both 1997 and 1998 and actually won one in 1999 for his short film Election Night (1998). The Last Viking fits seamlessly into Jensen's darkly comical oeuvre, which includes Adam's Apples, Men & Chicken and Riders of Justice
