The Visitor

In the melancholic, carefully filmed The Visitor, we see how a Lithuanian expat returns to his birthplace to sell his deceased parents' house. Danielius has built a stable life in Norway, but returning to his childhood home evokes a deep sense of melancholy in him. 

What should have been a short trip to settle the estate inadvertently turns into a longer stay. With cassette tapes and encounters with old friends, Danielius tries to reconstruct his past, but despite the familiarity of his surroundings, he no longer feels at home. This slightly absurd and poetic film follows his silent struggle with letting go and invites the viewer to join him in searching for the reason why, trapped in his childhood memories, he keeps postponing the inevitable farewell.

The Visitor premiered this summer at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, where it won the Best Director Award, and was subsequently screened at film festivals in Riga and Ghent, among others. The screening at the Northern Film Festival is the Dutch premiere. The Visitor is also the directorial debut of Vitautas Katkus, who co-wrote it with Marija Kavtaradzė (Slow, 2023). Katkus also did the cinematography for Gabrielė Urbonaitė's film Renovation (2025), which will also be screened at this year's Northern Film Festival.
