A Light That Never Goes Out

After a nervous breakdown, the brilliant, classically trained flutist Pauli (29) returns to his childhood home on the north coast of Finland. Vulnerable and uncomfortable, he encounters his former classmate Iiris, a quirky musician who still lives in the quiet village and makes experimental music there—even when there is no audience.

She convinces Pauli to join forces and create something that no one has ever heard before. Together with the gruff Sini, they form a band—no, a paramilitary sound art collective—with an unpronounceable name and a completely unique sound, created with vintage equipment and household appliances. Although Pauli has always strived for perfection, he discovers a new voice in Iiris' chaotic energy.

A Light That Never Goes Out premiered in the ACID section of the Cannes Film Festival and marks the feature film debut of director Lauri-Matti Parppei, who, as a musician, hopes to infect viewers with his love of music and persuade them to experiment. The musical performances were recorded live during the filming, which only makes the interplay between the outcasts more authentic. An inspiring debut about friendship, finding light in mental darkness, a dog with a skin problem, and daring to let go of everything you know.

A Light That Never Goes Out is the opening film of the 45th edition of the Northern Film Festival & the Young NoFF Pick.
