Solomamma

Edith, a forty-year-old journalist, consciously chose to become a single mother through an anonymous sperm donor. She is now the happy mother of a five-year-old son, but the emotional pressure is beginning to weigh on her and doubts are creeping in. When she unexpectedly discovers the identity of the donor, her curiosity gets the better of her. 

Under the guise of an interview, she seeks out the successful game developer Niels, but a calculated encounter leads to a deep and authentic connection. As Edith becomes increasingly entangled in her lies, the fragile balance of the life she has so carefully constructed is threatened. With tight direction and a good soundtrack, this understated Norwegian drama intriguingly explores the minefield of modern parenthood and the dilemmas of desire, identity and ethics that come with it. 

Solomamma is the second film by director Janicke Askevold and features strong performances by lead actors Lisa Loven Kongsli (Quisling, Turist) and Herbert Nordrum (The Worst Person in the World). The film premiered last August at the 78th Locarno Film Festival, where it won the Ecumenical Prize and was nominated for Best Film. Solomamma was also screened at film festivals in Vancouver and Gothenburg, among others, and received a nomination for a Competition 1-2 Award at the Warsaw International Film Festival.
