Sorda

This poignant and inspiring Spanish drama offers a sensitive look at the complex relationship between Ángela, who is deaf, and her hearing partner Héctor, who are expecting their first child together. Although the happy couple claims they can handle anything, their underlying concerns come to the surface after the difficult birth of their daughter. 

While waiting to find out whether the baby can hear or not, the balance in their relationship is disrupted. Ángela struggles to find her role as a mother in a hearing society that is not geared towards her, and Héctor finds it difficult to understand the full extent of her challenges. The layered Sorda is a portrait full of warmth and intimacy, which questions the assumptions of the hearing world and gives the deaf community a much-needed voice.

Sorda was written and directed by Eva Litertad, who cast her sister, deaf actress Miriam Garlo, in the lead role. It premiered earlier this year at the 75th Berlinale, where it won the Panorama Audience Award and the Arthouse Cinema Award. At the Málaga Spanish Film Festival, Sorda won the Audience Award and the prizes for Best Film and Best Spanish Film, among others.
