Noordelijk Film Festival starts collaboration with Emden-Norderney
LEEUWARDEN Het Noordelijk Film Festival is starting a collaboration with the German Internationales Film Fest Emden-Norderney. Under the banner “Nieuwe maatjes – Neue Freunden” (New Friends), a showcase of three Noorderkroon films will be shown at the festival in Emden on 15 June. The directors will also travel to Germany.
Noorderkroon is the competition organised annually by het Noordelijk Film Festival for filmmakers from the north of the Netherlands. From the previous edition, directors Sammy Shefa Idris (Vaders zijn ook zonen, winner of Best Student Film and Greatest Young Talent), Susanne Hagen (Rups) and Tom Tieman (Huilende bruiden, winner of Best Short Documentary) and their producers will be travelling to Germany. In addition to the screening of the films, there will also be a Q&A with the filmmakers.
Baarch by Rutger Veenstra (winner of Best Short Fiction) will also be shown. This film is not part of the showcase, but is included in the programme and has been nominated for the Ostfriesische Kurzfilmpreis.
Talented directors across the border
Henriëtte Poelman, artistic director of het Noordelijk Film Festivals, says of the collaboration: ‘We are very enthusiastic about this international exchange, which allows us to present three talented directors from the northern Netherlands across the border. Their diverse films are all strong, exploratory, with their own voice and topical in their own way, which will also resonate in Ostfriesland.’
‘Foundation for a sustainable cultural bridge’
Hester Terpstra, Director-Manager of the organising foundation Film in Friesland adds: “With this collaboration, we are laying the foundation for a sustainable cultural bridge between the northern Netherlands and north-western Germany. We not only want to introduce audiences to each other’s stories, but also encourage exchange between filmmakers and work on new cross-border co-productions. This is a great first step towards long-term collaboration and visibility for our regional film culture in a European context.”
In November, a German delegation will visit Leeuwarden, where het Noordelijk Film Festival will take place from 5 to 9 November. During the NoFF, the roles will be reversed: there will be a showcase of East Frisian short films, followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers.
The “Nieuwe Maatjes – Neue Freunden” project is made possible by Eems Dollard Regio (EDR) and the Interreg programme Deutschland-Nederland and its programme partners, and is co-financed by the European Union.
