Sing Sing

John ‘Divine G’ Whitfield, played by Oscar-nominated Colman Domingo, is unjustly imprisoned. By joining a theatre group with fellow inmates, he finds not only a purpose, but also a chance to regain his humanity.

This unique film is based on the real Rehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA) programme, which has already changed many lives. Greg Kwedar and co-writer Clint Bentley give the story a depth beyond traditional prison films. This is also due to the strong cast, whose personal experiences manage to give wonderful and honest performances. In fact, the cast is partly made up of former prisoners who participated in the RTA programme. Director Kwedar (Transecos, LIFF 2016) won the audience award ‘Festival Favorite’ at SXSW with Sing Sing.

The screening will be followed by a conversation with Elma Weever, who is a guard at the Zwolle Penitentiary Institution and works with prisoners in the department of labour.
