Sentimental Value
After the death of their mother, sisters Nora (Renate Reinsve) and Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas) are once again confronted with their father Gustav, who left the family when the sisters were still young. Gustav (Stellan Skarsgård), once a celebrated filmmaker, hopes to restore both his reputation and his relationship with his daughters with an autobiographical screenplay about his mother's suicide.
He offers the now successful stage actress Nora the lead role, but she refuses to appear in the film. While the film is being made with American actress Rachel (Elle Fanning) in her place, tensions within the family continue to rise: Gustav struggles with his traumatic past and the sisters clash over their life and love choices. With subtle humour, tenderness and raw honesty, Sentimental Value shows that art can be a quest for recognition, but also an unexpected path to reconciliation. With beautiful performances from all the main actors and a moving portrayal of family ties, which is strikingly strong in the bond between the sisters.
Director Joachim Trier is known for, among other things, the film The Worst Person in the World (2021), which was nominated for two Oscars and in which Renate Reinsve also starred in the lead role. Trier's latest film will have its Dutch premiere at the NoFF. Sentimental Value won the Grand Prix at the 78th Cannes Film Festival this spring and received a standing ovation of more than fifteen minutes at the Toronto International Film Festival.
