Due to her mother's long absence, 11-year-old Lu lives in a foster home. But suddenly there she is, her mother, ready to be a mother again. She secretly takes Lu on an adventurous road trip in her classic sports car, all the way to Poland. Along the way, Lu finds out about her mother's radical nature, and after they practically imagine themselves being Bonnie and Clyde, reality catches up with them. It makes them think: how far will they go to stay together forever?
Kiddo is the debut feature film by Zara Dwinger and, although a family film, is also a big nod to the lovers-on-the-run genre. Together with, among others, screenwriter Nena van Driel, who is originally from Leeuwarden, Dwinger put the Netherlands on a global map with Kiddo by excelling in cinematography, script and sound design. The film premiered at the Berlinale 2023.
