Anneloes grew up within the closed community of the Orthodox Reformed Congregations. At the age of sixteen, she reported sexual abuse by her father and brother, but both were acquitted. The events left deep scars.

More than 25 years later, Anneloes speaks with people from her past—those who dare to face her—and reflects on her damaged life. In this powerful documentary, she explores how a sense of security can turn into oppression, and how a sheltered world can harbor subtle abuse of power.

I was only a child by documentary filmmaker Geertjan Lassche premiered at the Movies That Matter festival in The Hague last spring and was also shown on television in March and August. The film, produced by Janneke Doolaard and Drenthe-born Harmen Jalvingh, is part of a documentary series about the Ten Commandments and focuses on the fifth one: ‘Honor your father and mother.
