Fabula
In Fabula, the new film by Michiel ten Horn (Aanmodderfakker), we follow Jos, a failed criminal from a Limburg family that has been plagued by misfortune for generations. When a drug deal goes wrong and his brother disappears without a trace, Jos embarks on a desperate search for an explanation for his misfortune.
In the marshy hills of Limburg, he encounters a variety of eccentric characters who gradually bring him closer to the truth. In his personal odyssey, he gradually learns to open himself up to the magic that lies hidden in stories. Fabula is a mixture of a comedic crime drama, road movie and action film, with a touch of fantasy and folklore, and spoken entirely in the Limburg dialect - a quirky declaration of love to our southernmost province.
With Fabula, this year's opening film at the IFFR, director Michiel ten Horn takes us to his native region. Remarkably, both the lead role and four other roles are played by Fedja van Huêt, who previously appeared at the Northern Film Festival in Jörgen Scholtens' Vaders & Zonen (2022). Following this screening of Fabula, musician Djurre de Haan (known from Awkward I) will be present for a discussion about the music in Fabula and his collaboration on previous films by Michiel ten Horn.
