Ange
In this latest, infectious film by director Tony Gatlif, we follow 60-year-old Ange, played by actor and musician Arthur H. Ange is a wandering bohemian and music ethnologist who feels a deep-rooted need to reconcile with his old friend Marco (Mathieu Amalric).
On his journey, he is accompanied by Solea, the rebellious daughter of his great love Georgina, whom he knew as a child. Solea is in a phase of rebellion and resists the whole world. What begins as a simple journey turns into a musical journey with beautiful melancholic and joyful singing and dancing, mainly from the Roma and Sinti communities. As Ange and Solea continue on their way together, they find unexpected moments of joy and rediscover the taste of hope.
Ange premiered this spring at the 78th Cannes Film Festival with an open-air screening in the Cinéma de la Plage section, making it the seventh film by director Tony Gatlif to screen at the festival since his Un Certain Regard Award-winning film Safe Journey (1993). Gatlif's work is known for its focus on the Roma people in Europe, to whom he is partly descended, since he made the film Corre, gitano in 1981.
