Hoera! Het Noordelijk Film Festival begint al een beetje op 17 oktober in Slieker Film. Als voorproefje op de Roma films vertonen we hier Just the Wind. Twee andere films in de Roma Route die tijdens het festival worden vertoond zijn An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker (Grote Juryprijs winnaar van Berlijn) en Martin Sulík’s coming-of-age film Cigán.
Just the Wind, de Hongaarse inzending voor de Oscars, brengt op indringende wijze één dag in beeld van het leven van de Hongaarse Roma, van de vooroordelen en het racisme waarmee zij dagelijks te maken hebben. De film werd met drie prijzen, Jury grand prix (zilveren beer), Amnesty International Film Prize en Peace Film Award, bekroond tijdens de Berlinale 2012.
Het nieuws van alweer een racistische moord op een Roma-familie gaat als een lopend vuurtje door een Hongaars dorpje. De daders zijn gevlucht en de politie lijkt niet veel te doen. Voor het nabij wonende Roma-gezin van Mari is deze moord een bevestiging van haar angstige voorgevoelens. Haar echtgenoot woont in Canada. Hij wil dat Mari, hun twee kinderen Anna en Rio, en opa Toni zo snel mogelijk naar hem toe komen. Angstig voor een nieuwe aanval probeert het gezin de dag door te komen. Met haar twee baantjes tracht Mari genoeg geld bij elkaar te sprokkelen om met haar gezin naar Canada te vertrekken. Tiener Anna doet haar best om zich op school te concentreren. De jonge Rio houdt zich met andere zaken bezig… Tegen de avond, als het donker wordt in het dorp, kruipt de familie dicht tegen elkaar aan. Een onverwacht geluid doet ze opschrikken, maar ze wuiven het weg als ‘slechts het geluid van de wind’.
JUST THE WIND is gebaseerd op waargebeurde aanslagen in Hongarije, waarbij zeker acht mensen werden gedood binnen een jaar tijd.
