Twee van de films uit de Interregio Competitie 2011 van het Noordelijk Film Festival zijn afgelopen zondag in de prijzen gevallen op het 47ste Chicago International Film Festival. Deze awards, Gold en Silver Hugo’s, worden toegekend aan “the best of what the world is watching”. Actrice Olivia Colman won de Best Actress Silver Hugo voor haar rol in Paddy Considine’s Tyrannosaur en in de New Directors Competition sleepte Runar Runarsson met Volcano de Silver Hugo in de wacht.
De jury over Volcano:
“a film that triggers a deep emotional response that has nothing to do with sentimentality. It juxtaposes domestic space with the dramatic Icelandic landscape to riveting effect. Not just another film about redemption, Rúnar Rúnarsson’s debut depicts the moral ambiguity of the choices facing a complex, older man.”
Volcano blijft overigens hoge ogen gooien. In september werd bekend dat de film IJsland zal representeren als inzending voor Best Foreign film bij de Oscars. Na een première in Cannes werd de film geselecteerd voor prestigieuze internationale filmfestivals als die van Karlovy Vary en Toronto. Sindsdien lijkt de film in geen enkele officiële selectie van belangrijke filmfestivals te ontbreken.
