Fredau Buwalda, artistic director of the Northern Film Festival, says goodbye to the festival. She will start a new job at NHL Stenden in January 2022 as a Coach and Teacher of Art and Culture Management.
Fredau has been associated with our organization since 2010, first as a film programmer for Filmhouse Leeuwarden at the time, and later as an assistant programmer of the Northern Film Festival. From 2014 she became fully responsible for the programming and developed into a passionate artistic director. Under Fredau’s leadership, the northern perspective of the Northern Film Festival became a true focus. She built up a large international northern network and at the same time had a sharp and stimulating eye for filmmakers in or from her own region: Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe. Fredau was an enthusiastic promoter of new initiatives such as the Filmkick Competition, Noorderkroon Competition and recently the Ecocinema programme.
The last Northern Film Festival under her leadership was able to take place this month in a modified form. Fredau’s stamp, however, left its mark on the film program, the design and the atmosphere as usual.
We will miss her!
